Modern window glazing bars: aesthetics and functionality
Window muntins are a solution that is becoming increasingly popular and has actually been known for centuries. In the past, however, they were mainly a structural element of the window and connected smaller glazing, stiffening and sealing the entire structure. Currently, muntins primarily perform an aesthetic function, influencing the appearance and character of the entire building. What exactly are muntins and what types of this type of decoration can we distinguish? What architectural style will they fit? Why is it worth deciding to install this type of element in your windows? We answer all these questions in our article!
What are window muntins?
Muntins are horizontal and vertical decorative strips that divide window panes into smaller parts, called quarters. Mullions are made of the same material as window profiles, thus creating an elegant, coherent structure. They are most often installed in wooden windows. In the past, they had a practical function, constituting an essential element of window joinery, and today they are chosen solely to improve the aesthetics and emphasize the style of the interior or facade of the building.
What are the types of glazing bars?
Manufacturers offer different types of window glazing bars, which differ primarily in the method of installation, ease of maintenance and cleaning, and price. We distinguish the following variants:
- structural muntin bars: this is a traditional model, used in the old days, muntin bars are a structural element creating smaller fields into which separate, smaller panes are inserted, they are durable, but may negatively affect the thermal insulation of windows;
- internal muntin bars: muntin bars are mounted inside the pane (in double- or triple-glazed structures), thanks to which the pane of glass is undivided and remains smooth on both sides, which makes it easier to clean the windows;
- Viennese muntin bars: here we can choose a variant with duplex (so-called blind muntin bars are inserted between the panes) or without duplex (without the use of blind muntin bars), in both cases special decorative strips imitating real muntin bars are glued to the outer part of the window structural.
Why is it worth installing muntin bars in windows?
Gmuntin bars work best in large windows, giving the structure lightness and an elegant look. Such a decorative element changes the character of the entire building, so you can easily match old window joinery to the new elevation.
The most important advantages of windows with glazing bars include:
- improving the aesthetics of the window joinery and the building’s facade,
- the possibility of personalizing and matching the appearance of windows to the architectural style,
- universality of use – window glazing bars will work well not only in palaces and manor houses,
- durability, lightness and ease of installation.
What buildings are windows with glazing bars suitable for?
Thanks to the various variants of glazing bars and the possibility of any installation – vertically and/or horizontally, this element will be perfect as a finishing touch for many buildings, maintained in both classic and modern style. Glazing bars fit perfectly into the rustic atmosphere, wooden houses and old manor houses and at the same time can emphasize industrial or loft arrangements in an original way.
